5 Fun Car Games to Keep Kids Entertained on Road Trips
There is nothing that tests a parent's patience quite like the eternal question form the back seat: "Are we there yet?" Family road trips create wonderful memories, but long distances often result in bored and restless children.
While handing over a tablet is an easy fix, interactive games offer a unique opportunity for family bonding without relying on screens. Here are five classic and creative games that will help the miles fly by and keep everyone smiling.
1. I Spy With My Little Eye
This is perhaps the most universally recognized car game, and for good reason. It’s perfect for all ages and requires absolutely no equipment.
How to play: One player chooses something they can see inside or outside the car (as long as it stays visible for a moment) and says, "I spy with my little eye, something that is..." followed by the color of the object. The other passengers have to guess what it is. Whoever guesses correctly takes the next turn. For older kids, you can increase the difficulty by using the first letter of the object instead of the color.
2. The Alphabet Game
This game is excellent for children who are learning to read, as it forces them to observe the world around them closely.
How to play: The goal is to find every letter of the alphabet, in order, from A to Z. Kids must look out the window and spot the letters on road signs, billboards, license plates, or shop fronts. The first person to reach Z wins. If you have multiple children, they can work together as a team to beat the parents!
3. Twenty Questions
This logic game keeps kids' minds sharp and can occupy a significant chunk of time on the highway.
How to play: One player thinks of an object, animal, or person. The other players are allowed to ask up to 20 questions to guess what it is. The catch is that the player can only answer with "Yes" or "No." If the guessers can't figure it out after 20 questions, the player who thought of the object wins the round.
