A Family-Friendly Summer Weekend in Kalamata

Anastasia

At the age of 16, I spent a year in the Netherlands as part of an exchange program. There, I met people from all over the world, and it was the best year of my life. This experience is what inspired me to guide children and teenagers today through camps and various exchange programs, as well as through volunteer initiatives that help young people build their self-confidence. I write for Momizen about alternative educational programs, and my advice is based on years of personal experience.

A Family-Friendly Summer Weekend in Kalamata

When parents think about weekend getaways with kids, a small panic often kicks in: Will the children be calm? Where will we eat? Are there activities they’ll enjoy? Will the parents get any time to relax? Reasonable questions — but nothing to worry about if you have a handy little guide in your hands. This article is a personal guide for spending a few relaxing days in Kalamata with kids, full of ideas, suggestions and tips to help the whole family enjoy themselves, stress-free. And the best part? Many of these tips apply to other summer destinations too — so take notes!

Where to Stay

Kalamata offers a variety of accommodation options, from hotels to Airbnbs. It’s a fairly touristy destination, so you’ll find places for every budget. I recommend Airbnb for more comfort and independence, especially if you’re traveling with small children. Airbnb’s map view helps you choose whether you want to be near the center or wake up to a sea view.

Beach Time & Summer Relaxation

Kalamata’s beach is ideal for families. It’s long, with fine pebbles and sand — perfect for playing. The waters are clean and shallow near the shore, making it relatively safe for kids. It’s also stroller-friendly, and just 10 minutes from the city center by car. Along the beach, you’ll find many beach bars and cafes, offering free sunbeds with a purchase, and shaded spots under trees. For something quieter, head a bit further to Verga — the waters are clearer, the pebbles bigger, and it’s more peaceful.

Short Distances & Easy Movement

One of Kalamata’s best features for families is its compact layout. Beach, squares, food, and activities — everything is within 10–15 minutes by foot or car. That means less hassle and more time to rest and play. The city is also flat and stroller-friendly, with pedestrian zones, ramps, and wide sidewalks — so you won’t have to carry or struggle with the stroller.

Food & Coffee with Kids (Stress-Free)

Kalamata has many dining options, but when you’re with kids, you need places that are comfortable, welcoming, and cater to both little ones and adults.

  • PLATEA (in the main square): Popular with kids who gather with scooters and bikes in the afternoons. Great visibility, nice space, good food and coffee. There’s also a small arcade next door.

  • Vatouriona: A traditional taverna with excellent food and a huge fenced grassy garden. Kids can play freely while parents eat in peace.

  • Pralina (on the beach): Perfect for dessert or ice cream, with a playground right next to it — great for afternoon outings.

  • Tigris: The busiest summer play area on the beach. Right next to a small summer amusement park with trampolines, bumper cars, and more.

  • Souvlaki at Tzimis: Casual and delicious. Located near the historic center and ideal for an evening stroll as kids ride scooters and bikes in the square.

Walks & Activities

  • Stroll in the Historic Center: Narrow streets, neoclassical homes, boutique shops and cozy cafes — a pleasant experience for both adults and children. Best enjoyed early morning or late afternoon.

  • OSE Park: One of the top family spots in Kalamata! This old railway park features:

    • a large playground

    • old train cars for kids to explore

    • a roller/skate park

    • volleyball and basketball courts

    • two more small playgrounds

    • and of course, a café for parents You can easily spend hours here without noticing time go by.

Tips for a Calm Weekend

  • Go out in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat

  • Bring scooters, bikes, beach toys — things your kids love and that will keep them entertained when they’re tired or bored

  • Alternate beach–food–rest to avoid exhausting the kids (or yourselves!)

  • Don’t over-plan — Kalamata is made for relaxation

Finally, Kalamata offers everything you need for a peaceful and fun family trip. You don’t need much planning — just a good mood and a few smart choices. And best of all? Everyone will go home smiling.
