While snow in Athens during Christmas is a rare site, there is plenty of sparkle everywhere you go. During December, the city fills with Christmas markets, ice rinks, carousels and Santa's houses, many of them are free. Check-pit is where to go with kids, and how to plan it so the evening ends with loukoumades and tired kids ready for bed.

Most venues announce their 2026 programmes in mid-November. The details below are based on last season, and we will update this guide as soon as the new dates are out.

The big three in central Athens

Syntagma Square Christmas tree. The season officially starts when the City of Athens lights the big tree in Syntagma, usually in the last days of November or the first days of December, with a free concert. Last year the tree was lit on 27 November. Arrive early with small kids, as the square fills fast. Afterwards, walk down Ermou and Kolonaki to see the street lights.

Christmas Factory, Technopolis, Gazi. The city's flagship Christmas park, right next to Kerameikos metro station. Last season it ran from 22 November to 6 January. Expect Santa's house, elves' workshops, a Christmas market, a theatre show, and a Fun Park with a carousel, Ferris wheel, slides and an ice rink. Many of the workshops are free, while some rides and the show need tickets. Until about 22 December it opens on weekday afternoons and all day at weekends; after that it opens daily from morning to night. Tip: start with the queue for Santa, as it only gets longer.

Christmas village, Pedion tou Areos. The large park near Viktoria and Victoria Square turns into a free Christmas village with an ice rink, a carousel, wooden chalets with gifts and food, and concerts. Last season it stayed open until 7 January and ended the year with a big New Year's Eve concert. Good for an after-school visit, and easy by metro.

By the sea

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), Kallithea. Every December, the SNFCC turns its park and canal area into a Christmas world with an ice rink, a Christmas market with handmade gifts, street food, workshops and the BioLumina light installations. On New Year's Eve, the SNF Run is a lovely family tradition, with shorter routes for kids. Bring scooters for the long promenade.

Santa's park, Flisvos Marina, Palaio Faliro. A seaside Christmas park with games, concerts and a visit to Santa's house. Great for combining with a walk along the marina.

Ticketed Christmas parks

Santa Claus Kingdom. An indoor and outdoor Christmas park with children's workshops, Santa's house, a little train, an ice rink, a play area, shows and fairground rides. Last season it ran until 6 January.

Christmas village at Paradise Park. A hands-on village with a chocolate workshop, a little train, an elves' sculpture workshop and Santa's farm. From 1 to 6 January it turns into a New Year village, where kids make their own lucky charms (gouria) from clay.

Neighbourhood Christmas villages

In past years, the City of Athens has also set up small Christmas villages in around ten neighbourhoods, open from 23 December to 6 January. They are free, close to home and much calmer than the big parks. Check your local municipality's programme in December.

Tips from parents who have done it

  • Go on a weekday afternoon. Weekends and the days around 24 December are busiest everywhere.
  • Book tickets online for shows and paid parks. Some theatre tickets at the Christmas Factory include free entry to the park on the same day.
  • Take the metro. Technopolis (Kerameikos), Pedion tou Areos (Viktoria) and Syntagma are all on the metro, and parking near them is hard.
  • Dress like an onion. Athens evenings in December get cold and damp, especially on the ice and by the sea.
  • Bring socks and gloves for the ice rinks. Many rinks require gloves for children.
  • Agree a meeting point the moment you arrive, in case you lose each other in the crowd.
