What is the Züri Märlitram?
The Märlitram, or Fairy Tale Tram, is a special tram that runs through Zurich for a limited time each year. Operated by the city's transport authority (VBZ) it is not your average tram ride. The interior is magically decorated, and on board, children are treated to stories told by two angels, all while Samichlaus (the Swiss Santa Claus) himself drives the tram. It’s a cherished tradition that has captivated children between the ages of 4 to 10 for over 60 years.
The ride is a kid-only adventure, which adds to the excitement. Parents drop off their children, who then embark on a 20-minute journey through the city, completely immersed in a world of stories and wonder.
Big News: The Märlitram Arrives in Spring!
Traditionally, the Märlitram has been a highlight of the Advent season, running from late November until Christmas Eve. The tickets for this period are notoriously difficult to secure, often selling out within minutes of going on sale.
Recognizing its immense popularity, the organizers have now introduced a spring season. This new schedule gives more families the chance to participate. It's a fantastic opportunity for children celebrating spring birthdays or for families who find the Christmas season too hectic. The experience remains just as magical, swapping snow-dusted streets for blooming cityscapes.
