Our favorite farm in the Zug area
We moved to Steinhausen in 2018 and since then I've seen a lot of beautiful, sweet, cute and interesting places in the canton of Zug, but when I think about which place my twin boys and I like the most, it's this farm!
About 10-15 minutes from Zug, you'll find this beautiful farm that's open year-round. Upon arrival, you'll find ample parking at two different farm entrances, and a bonus point, the parking is always free and always open!
The first thing we noticed when we came were the cows and horses. My boys love most animals, but they just adore cows and horses, which are in abundance here, so that was our first stop. The animals are generally clean and very friendly, and petting is, as they write on their website, not only allowed, but encouraged! They also have chickens that roam freely*, dogs, donkeys, goats and various poultry like ducks, geese, pigeons, peacocks, even some species that I don't even know the real names of
* Eggs can be bought in the little shop at the back (farm shop on site)
Playgrounds
This is why you come here in the first place if you have kids! That and the animals, of course! There are at least three playgrounds, so you can easily spend a whole day going from one to the other and so on. The main playground is in the middle, in front of the cafe. There are chairs and tables where you can sit and have something to eat or drink while the kids play. The huge sandpit has all the equipment, toys and a water source the kids need to have a great sand experience. We spent many hot summer days here, and a super useful tip is to bring spare clothes, because whether they're little or big, the kids WILL get wet (and this goes for slightly cooler days too; the kids just seem to always need extra clothes somehow)!
Playground 1
The cafeteria is in the white building behind the sandbox
The sandbox has a big sunroof that is always open in the summer when the sun is scorching hot Another good idea is to bring snacks and water because no matter how long you think you're going to stay, you'll end up staying longer. If the cafeteria is closed, at least you don't have to scramble around looking for water. There is a toilet in the barn where the cows are and I think the water there is OK to drink, but still, it's better to come prepared.
The tool shed with toys and all the tools for the kids
Playground 2
The climbing playground is right above the big basketball court (which is sometimes used as a parking lot) where the kids can run around, kick the ball around or zoom around on their scooters. In this playground you can climb, slide down the fireman's pole, play with the small rocks (good for digging) or just sit around with your friends.
Playground 3
The third playground can be found at the very back of the farm, near the trees and a small stream, where there is a large fire pit. Also nearby is the bird and an enclosure with donkeys and goats. The small stream is a favorite of the kids in the summer where they can get their feet wet. This is the only playground with a slide, swings and a seesaw.
Right behind the playground is a large barbecue area with grill and wood.
Grilling/BBQ spots
Another cool thing you will find around the farm are several spots (mainly around the playgrounds) where you can grill. The wood is also provided at these spots, so you just need to bring something to grill and matches. You can usually even find paper and small kindling to make a fire.
Coffee
The Weid Kafi-Coffee Shop is open on Wednesdays and Fridays afternoons and Saturdays mornings AND afternoons. Behind the corner there is a book log shelf with free books that can be taken, borrowed, returned and/or exchanged. The Weid-Kafi offers cakes, drinks and coffee, as well as snacks and homemade soup. In summer there is of course also ice cream made in-house. It is also possible to rent the premises for events and parties.
Farm shop
The Weid Laden-Farm shop is open daily and Saturdays. Products from our own production and from regional suppliers are sold here. All products in the extensive range come from controlled organic cultivation. The range extends from fresh fruit and vegetables to meat and dairy products to everyday products. The farm is also a workplace for the people in need mentioned above.
Carpentry
Another interesting room that can be seen behind the coffee shop and the playgrounds is the carpentry shop. High quality products made from Swiss wood are made here, such as furniture, toys and decorative items.
Tractors! We are on a farm after all
This is one of the very cool offers that the farm has and the kids love it! There is a large selection of all kinds of vehicles for the kids, from the little ones to older children, maybe even up to 8, 9 years old. The smaller cars are for toddlers, while the larger tractors with the trailers are for the older children.
Hiking trail. Walking trail
It starts to the left of the parking lot and winds around the back of the farm. According to the website, there are alpine and panoramic views of the area with an information board with all the peaks that are visible.
Animals
Goats share the enclosure with the donkeys and you'll also occasionally see horse riders coming by and saying hello to the kids
There's a big area outside for the chickens so they can come out and run around.
The ducks and geese are all in an area right above playground 3 and the BBQ area. The animals can get very noisy and very protective of their eggs depending on what time of year you visit Final thought: This is a perfect place if it's sunny and warm outside it's cloudy and other places are closed it's always open and the people are very friendly
you want some peace and quiet In the summer the place is full of fruit trees, mainly apple and plum. You can buy fresh eggs, fruit and vegetables.
