As a mom of three, I love the magic of Halloween – the pumpkins, the excitement of going out after dark, and of course… the costumes! But let’s be honest: between work, school, and after-school activities, I don’t always have the time (or patience) to sew or DIY elaborate outfits.
Luckily, more and more Swiss families are celebrating Halloween, which means costumes are easy to find – both online and in shops like Manor, Coop and H&M, even Aldi and Lidl during October. And for those of us who prefer second-hand, Petit Marche, Ricardo, Tutti, or local Facebook groups are full of great deals.
This year I looked at the list of trending Halloween costumes and picked the ones that are simple, fun, and easy to get in Switzerland – no hot glue gun required.

Tips From a Busy Swiss Mom
Here’s how I keep things easy while making sure the kids are happy:
1. Shop early in October
In Switzerland, Halloween costumes sell out quickly – especially at Manor, Coop City, or Franz Carl Weber. Order online by mid-October to avoid paying express delivery fees.
2. One-piece suits are lifesaver
Jumpsuits, fleece suits, or full costume sets are warm and quick to put on – and you can easily layer thermal underwear underneath. Essential for chilly Swiss evenings!
3. Keep it comfortable
Choose costumes with soft fabrics and easy fasteners (Velcro, zippers). Nothing ruins Trick-or-Treat faster than a scratchy outfit.
4. Think safety
October nights are dark in Switzerland:
Add a reflective band or small LED clip light (Migros sells affordable ones).
Avoid heavy masks – simple face paint is easier and safer.
Use a sturdy reusable shopping bag or rucksack for sweets.
5. Reuse & recycle
Costumes don’t have to be one-night wonders:
Save them for Fasnacht (Carnival) in February.
Pass them down to siblings or cousins.
Swap with other parents in your Gemeinde or Kita group.
What My Kids Picked This Year
My daughter decided on Wednesday Nevermore Academy – a ready-to-wear black dress with a collar that I found at H&M. Simple, chic, and something she can even wear again for a school party.
My son chose the Minecraft Chicken Jockey – I ordered a full costume online. It arrived within a week, light enough for him to run around comfortably, and I don’t have to worry about sewing anything.
Done. Ordered. Stress-free.
Quick Parent Hacks
Buy one size up → so you can fit a jacket or warm layers underneath.
Check second-hand first → Petit Marche App for sustainable kids fashion, Ricardo, Tutti are treasure troves in October.
Take photos of the kids before Trick-or-Treating → the costume looks best before the chocolate and melted lollipops appear.
Halloween doesn’t have to mean late-night crafting. Whether you pick up a superhero cape at Coop, order a Stitch onesie online, or borrow a rainbow skeleton suit from a friend – the joy is in the sparkle in your child’s eyes when they step into their character ....and at the sight of candy!
So keep it simple, keep it fun, and enjoy the evening together.
