Zoo, Waterpark, Nature: Why East Attica Is the Hidden Paradise for Families
If you live in East Attica, or haven't yet discovered what it has to offer, here's a revelation: this part of the region hides some of the most memorable family experiences in the whole Athens basin.
From Greece's only official zoo in Spata to the wetlands of Marathon and the calm beaches of Nea Makri and Porto Rafti, East Attica gives parents and children something the urban suburbs cannot: room to breathe.

Why East Attica Is Different
Pallini, Gerakas, Spata, Artemida, Rafina, Marathon, Nea Makri, Porto Rafti — areas with lower building density, easier access to nature and activities that go beyond the standard shopping centre play area.
Getting there: East Attica is primarily served by car. Mesogion Avenue and the Attica Tollway give fast access from the centre — usually 20-40 minutes. Weekend traffic is light.
The Star of the Show: Attica Zoological Park in Spata
Greece's only official zoo. Lions, primates, dolphins, birds from 320 species, a butterfly garden, a small farm and educational programmes that make the visit genuinely memorable.
Tickets: Approximately €10 adults, €8 children.
Practical tip: If you have a later flight or are returning early from an island trip, the Zoo makes a perfect stop — it's just 3 minutes from the airport.
