Zoo, Waterpark, Nature: Why East Attica Is the Hidden Paradise for Families

If you live in East Attica, or haven't yet discovered what it has to offer, here's a revelation: this part of the region hides some of the most memorable family experiences in the whole Athens basin.

From Greece's only official zoo in Spata to the wetlands of Marathon and the calm beaches of Nea Makri and Porto Rafti, East Attica gives parents and children something the urban suburbs cannot: room to breathe.

Before you start planning, visit Momizen.com — your complete directory of children's activities in East Attica, filtered for your area.

Why East Attica Is Different

Pallini, Gerakas, Spata, Artemida, Rafina, Marathon, Nea Makri, Porto Rafti — areas with lower building density, easier access to nature and activities that go beyond the standard shopping centre play area.

Getting there: East Attica is primarily served by car. Mesogion Avenue and the Attica Tollway give fast access from the centre — usually 20-40 minutes. Weekend traffic is light.

The Star of the Show: Attica Zoological Park in Spata

Greece's only official zoo. Lions, primates, dolphins, birds from 320 species, a butterfly garden, a small farm and educational programmes that make the visit genuinely memorable.

Tickets: Approximately €10 adults, €8 children.

Practical tip: If you have a later flight or are returning early from an island trip, the Zoo makes a perfect stop — it's just 3 minutes from the airport.

Aquapolis Athens in Spata

The most modern waterpark in Attica, right next to the Zoo. Open since 2020, it offers a full water experience for children of all ages — toddler pools, slides, water cannons.

Ideal for: Warm days from May to September. Leave early to avoid Attica Tollway traffic at weekends.

SportsPark in Spata

A multi-activity and play centre at the 1st km of Pikermiou Avenue. Bowling, laser tag, rollers, trampolines and a huge jungle frame play structure.

Hours: Thursday-Friday 16:00-22:00, Saturday-Sunday 10:00-22:00.

Kipopedia in Pallini

A hands-on play space at Ethnikis Antistaseos 39 that stands apart from every other play centre: here, play happens in nature. Wooden structures, imaginative play corners, drama, painting, dance, yoga and outdoor activities in a green setting. Educators on site at all times. Restaurant for parents.

Ideal for: Children aged 0-10 who have had enough of plastic toys.

Nature as a Playground

Lake Marathon and Schinias

28 km from the centre, one of Attica's ten remaining wetlands. Family walks, birdwatching, and the long sandy Schinias beach — perfect for cycling along the waterfront.

Nea Makri and Porto Rafti

Sandy beaches with shallow water, gentle waves and water sports for older children.

Rafina Beach in Skalopati

A pine forest next to the swimming pool, a playground, cycling trails. Clean, free, uncrowded.

Donkeysland in Koropi

One of the most touching experiences for animal-loving families. Children feed, pet and interact with rescued donkeys while expert guides explain each animal's story.

Distance: ~40 minutes from central Athens.

Ancient Vravrona in Artemida

An archaeological site and museum with an open-plan layout surrounded by nature. Ideal for children who love exploration — pair it with a swim at the Artemida beach.

Practical Tips for Parents in East Attica

Getting there: Car essential. Avoid Friday afternoon — traffic from Mesogion can triple your journey time.

Combined visits: Attica Park + Aquapolis = a full day. Marathon + Schinias + lunch in Rafina = the perfect family outing.

Panoramic view of Naxos, Greece, featuring the ancient Portara, a large stone doorway from the unfinished Temple of Apollo, in the foreground. The Portara frames a coastal scene with a whitewashed Cycladic town (Chora) on a hillside, a harbor filled with boats and a ferry, and rolling blue-gray hills in the background. The bright blue sea and sky contrast with the earthy tones of the rocky, grassy hill and the weathered stone pillars, highlighting the blend of ancient history and modern Mediterranean charm.
