The tradition of the Advent calendar and what it’s really about

At its heart, an Advent calendar is a daily rhythm of anticipation and connection. One small moment each day—from 1 to 24 December—helps children mark time, practise patience, and savour the season. The treat behind each door doesn’t need to be big because it is all about the ritual and the element of surprise.  It can be a joke at breakfast, a funny sticker, a sweet treat, a yes-day within limits, or break from the routine.

The tradition began in 19th-century German-speaking homes, where families marked the days to Christmas with chalk lines, candles, or little pictures. Early printed calendars appeared in the early 1900s and soon added windows to open, each one a tiny countdown. Today the idea is the same, just broader: calendars can be faith-based, story- or activity-driven, or simply playful—with chocolate, crafts, jokes, books, or reusable drawers.

How to keep the spirit while you shop

  • Sibling fairness system: Use colour-coded stickers per child or alternate “picker” days. May reduce arguments and speeds mornings.
  • Experiences versus material objects.  Aim for 1:2, one experience for every two small items. You’ll reduce clutter and kids still feel daily surprise.
  • Pocket math in cm. Many pockets fit only a folded A7 note. Pre-test with what you plan to insert (lip balm, LEGO minifig, tea bag).
  • Allergy & sugar strategy. Use “swap tokens” e.g., 1 cocoa with dad, to avoid daily sweets but keep the excitement.
  • Sensory-friendly days. Add calm prompts such as “three things I loved today” for overstimulated kids in mid-December.
  • Weather-proof. Pair each outdoor prompts with an indoor fallback printed on the back of the card.
  • Language/literacy boost. For early readers, print icon + simple text, and for bilingual homes, alternate English and German lines.
  • Logistics buffer for CH: Personalised items often need 1–3 weeks + customs; keep digital printables as a backup start kit.

What people usually miss (but you shouldn’t)

  • Lead time vs. 1 December: personalised items can take 1–3 weeks to make before dispatch.
  • Pocket maths: many pockets fit a folded note, not a Matchbox car. Check cm.
  • Siblings plan: buy duplicate card sets or choose activities with “pick one each.”
  • Refills: some sellers offer refill packs (STEM, kindness, jokes) for next year.
  • Language: confirm German text for the Deutschschweiz; some sets are EN only.
  • Customs/VAT: shipping from UK/US may incur fees; digital = zero customs.
  • Storage: felt folds flat; wooden houses need cupboard space.

And finally...

Focus on moments over stuff, oh and mix in some kindness prompts.
