General Description

Its rich collections, comprising over 11,000 exhibits, offer the visitor a panoramic view of ancient Greek civilization from the beginning of prehistory to late antiquity. Its exhibition halls, with dozens of rooms on each floor, cover an area of 8,000 square meters and house five large permanent collections: the 'Collection of Prehistoric Antiquities', the 'Collection of Sculpture', the 'Collection of Vases and Miniature Art', the 'Collection of Metalwork' and the 'Collection of Egyptian and Oriental Antiquities'. Several events, online educational activities for children and digital applications for children are organized.

Activities

The National Archaeological Museum offers activities for children: 

The National Archaeological Museum plans and implements free educational activities for children aged 6-13 years old, aiming to make the most of their free time, activating their imagination and developing their creativity. These activities usually include an educational tour/research in the Museum's galleries and an art activity/workshop, where children will make artworks inspired by the exhibits.

Educational programmes for school groups: 
  • The educational programme "Statues of the unheard" is addressed to Kindergarten students, as well as to the first and second grades of primary school. Children will learn about the way clay figurines are made, their costume and their use through the narration of a clay figurine that tells its life story. The number of students should not exceed 25. Duration of the programme: approximately 60 minutes.

  • The educational programme entitled "Hail and Drink or else to our health!" is addressed to students of the 3rd and 4th grade of primary school and aims to approach the daily life of the ancient Greeks and their art. Through this programme, students become familiar with drinking vessels, explore their shapes and decoration, appreciate the combination of art and functionality and gain knowledge about the daily life and habits of the ancient Greeks. The number of students should not exceed 25. Duration of the programme: approximately 60 minutes.

  • The educational activity entitled 'Two Athenians... Aristobulus and Philodemus in action' can be implemented by teachers using the Educational Material available on the Museum's website and is aimed at pupils in grades 3 to 6 of primary school.

  • The educational programme "The Mysteries of the Antikythera Mechanism" concerns the Mechanism from the Antikythera shipwreck, which is exhibited in the Collection of Metalwork of the National Archaeological Museum. The programme is addressed to school groups of all grades of secondary school and high school.

  • In addition, teachers at all levels have the opportunity to carry out: A simple tour of the Museum's permanent collections, a guided tour (in this case the school will consult directly with the private guide).
